WAIL: To understand where fruit and vegetables come from.
WAIL (Flashback): To cut safely using a knife.
We have been learning all about Oliver’s Vegetables in line with our learning all about growing. We have been thinking about Oliver’s Grandad’s garden and linked this to our own allotment too. We have thought about which vegetables grow in the ground and which grow above ground and how vegetables are harvested. We then thought that it would be a fantastic idea to make our very own vegetable soup! We popped out to our allotment to see what vegetables might be ready and we were able to harvest some spring onions which was exciting! We decided to then use carrots, onions and parsnips with some herbs from our allotment that we took turns cutting. We made sure that we washed our hands and then used the knives safely making a ‘bridge’ shape when cutting. We did flashback to when we made Gruffalo crumble and we remembered how to hold the knife safely and to move the food that we are cutting safely. We then put it together in a pot with some water and a vegetable stock cube. Our soup was cooking all morning. After lunch, our soup was ready but very chunky. We decided that we would prefer to eat ‘smooth’ soup, so we used a blender to make it much smoother. We then all had a go at eating the soup. We loved it and lots of the children thought that it tasted wonderful!
