Chicks - May 2025

WAIL: To understand where chicks come from.

WAIL: To think about life cycles (comparing humans to chicks).

We had an extremely exciting delivery this week! We were so excited to find that we had some eggs dropped off in an incubator in Foundation. We had a long chat about what we thought they could be. We thought really hard and looked at lots of clues and found that they were chick eggs! We spoke about what we needed to do to look after the chicks. We explained that they are living things who need to be taken care of. The children watched adults as we added to their water to make sure that they could be kept warm. We made sure that they were protected by sitting on a sturdy table and the children loved to watch them. The children were so excited when we came to school to find that an egg was starting to hatch! The children watched in awe as a chick came out of the egg. Sadly we missed it coming out completely but it was still so exciting! The children then learnt that the chick stays inside the incubator until it is dry. The children then couldn’t wait each day to see which new chicks had hatched. The chicks that were dry moved into their cage where they had to learn how to eat and drink. When the chicks were a big stronger, we got them out and could each have a hold of them. We then helped to clean them out. We did lots of writing and thought of describing words all about the chicks then did some fabulous writing in our red books. It was such a shame to say goodbye to the chicks but a wonderful time was had by all!
