WAIL: To combine ingredients for an outcome (making bread).
The children had a truly wonderful day bringing the story of The Little Red Hen to life through a hands-on bread-making experience. They listened carefully to the tale and learned how the corn had to be grown, harvested, and taken to the mill to be ground into flour. This is where we took over! Starting with a bag of flour—just like the hen—we added yeast to help the dough rise, along with a little oil, salt, and water. The children eagerly mixed the ingredients and used their muscles to knead the dough for five whole minutes! We then placed it in a bowl, covered with a tea towel to keep it warm. After two hours, the dough had risen beautifully. The children investigated the changes, had a good smell, and each shaped their own little roll. Once baked, we all enjoyed the delicious smell of warm, crusty bread filling the room. Many children said the rolls were "yummy" and "delicious"—some even wanted to make them again at home! It was a fantastic day full of learning, sensory exploration, and tasty rewards. Well done, everyone!
