Read or watch the first part of the story when mouse meets snake. Encourage the children to join in with the rhyme and pattern within the story and the repated refrain On went the mouse through the deep dark wood. “A snake saw the mouse and the mouse looked ……” Describe this new character, use talk partners to develop vocabulary.

Who did Mouse already meet and where has he been? Ask your child to draw a story map showing the journey Mouse has already taken through the woods. Can children remember who Mouse has met along the route?
