Bridges

During our Design and Technology unit on bridges, the Year 1 children explored a variety of bridge types through research and discussion. We examined the structure of different bridges and considered what makes them strong and stable. The children experimented with a range of joining techniques, including flange joins, slot joins, tabs, and L-braces. Using this knowledge, they selected suitable materials and created their own labelled bridge designs, incorporating the joining methods they had learned.

The children then brought their designs to life by constructing their own bridges. In the following DT lesson, they tested their creations to see if they met the design brief: to support the weight of a toy train. Many bridges held one train—and some even supported two or more! The children then evaluated their work, reflecting on the effectiveness of their joining techniques.

As part of the unit, we also took a walk around Shenley Church End to observe local bridges and underpasses. This outing provided a valuable real-world context for their learning and also allowed us to spot signs of spring—one child even counted 25 blossom trees!
