Sikhism Faith Week April 2025

Sikhism Faith Week – Year 1 Learning

During the week beginning 28th April 2025, the children at Glastonbury Thorn School took part in a special week focused on learning about the Sikh faith.

In Year 1, the children explored the significance of the 5 Ks – the five symbols of faith that are important to many Sikhs. They discussed how each of these symbols can help Sikhs make positive life choices and thought about which of the 5 Ks might be the most helpful in encouraging good living.

The children also considered why some Sikhs choose to wear all of the 5 Ks while others may not, deepening their understanding of personal beliefs and religious expression.

On Friday, the Year 1 children were very lucky to enjoy a special assembly and presentation by Mrs Roopra, a member of the Sikh community. The children asked thoughtful questions about her faith and made meaningful connections between Sikhism, other religions they’ve learnt about this year, and their own beliefs.

They also heard about what it’s like inside a Sikh temple, tried on traditional Sikh clothing, and had the opportunity to look closely at special Sikh objects – including a Kara (a steel bracelet).

It was a thoughtful and engaging week full of meaningful discussion, curiosity, and discovery!
