Your child is set a phonics and Maths weekly challenge to complete at home every Friday.
You must complete this work in order for your child to show their understanding in class. Please use the homework book provided to record any written work. These challenges are not marked, however if your child 'digs deeper' and shows improved understanding and increased confidence in class then they can achieve a 'Homework Hero' Marvellous Me badge!
Can your child become a Homework Hero!?
Your child is set a set of topic challenges relating to their previous term's work. There are 6 challenges and your child must choose at least 3 to complete over the half term. The challenges are designed to give your child the opportunity to demonstrate their improved understanding of the topic and to showcase how much they have learnt and remembered! We would like the children to have fun completing the challenges and feel proud of their achievements! At the end of each term, we will create a GTS gallery of the children's work. In the meantime, if your child would like to show their teacher and their friends how they are progressing, you are more than welcome to send in photos via the school office email and this will be passed on to the relevant staff.
These challenges are not marked, however if your child 'digs deeper' and shows fantastic independent learning, then they can achieve a 'Homework Hero' Marvellous Me badge!

Thank you all for your kind words and support so far and the feedback you are giving us. We are listening and will continue to adapt our provision to meet the needs of all families as best we can. In the meantime, here are some answers to feedback we have kindly received:
- What is a WAIL? This stands for 'What Am I Learning.'
- What is a Success Criteria? This is what we want the children to have achieved by the end of the session. Learning is a journey so don't worry if your child doesn't achieve this straight away. 'I can't do it...YET!'
- How can I complete all of the work when I am working full time? While we review this, the DFE guidelines are that children complete at least 3 hours of learning that matches the expectations of the 'normal' school day. One reason that we haven't moved directly to 'live' learning is we understand the pressures on parents and having to work at specific times (I am a parent myself ), therefore you can complete the work at a time that suits you and your child. The work will also stay on the website so if you do not manage every task, all work can be done at a time of your choosing.
- Why is some of the work too hard or too easy? We are reviewing this and will update you on how we are going to adjust this.
- My child would like to do more!? This is great to hear! We are currently updating the subject areas in our remote learning section on the website. You can also follow the new BBC service from next week. We fully support this but we do not want it to replace our relevant curriculum offer.
- Can we have all resources so we can print things out? Yes, we are looking at making this available for the week.
- Can we have live Zoom lessons? We are investigating this and how to effectively tailor this to the needs of our families. There will be more information on this shortly.
- How do I share my child's work? At the moment, you can share your child's work on Tapestry if they are in Foundation (EYFS). If your child is in Year 1 or Year 2, you can email a picture of your child's work or email an attachment if it is completed on a computer. We are currently discussing ways in which we are going to mark work and offer quality feedback. More information to follow!

In September 2020, all our classes returned to full-time education following the Covid-19 closure in March. Although we hope that the majority of our children will now have an uninterrupted experience, there is the possibility that an individual child, a class bubble, or indeed the whole school, may need to self-isolate for a period of time. We have therefore put in place a plan for remote learning so that all children can continue with their education. This meets the expectations set out in the DfE guidance ‘Remote Education Support’
Within the national guidelines, useful websites are provided. At Glastonbury Thorn, we encourage you to use this to compliment your child's learning at school. The following site is particularly useful:
Bitesize Daily has been developed by the BBC to provide new lessons every weekday for pupils in year 1 to year 10. Created in collaboration with teachers and educational experts, its videos and interactive activities cover core subjects and other topics on the school curriculum.
If a child does not have access to a computer/laptop and/or the internet, the school will do all it can to support children and will provide paper packs of learning. Where funding can be accessed, remote devices (eg, laptops) and/or 4G connections will be sought, particularly for disadvantaged children. Parents will be reminded to make the school aware of any barriers to accessing remote learning.
We are ensuring that if your child is self-isolating or if the bubble bursts and the children are learning from home, their learning will continue.
