Topic Sessions

Watch Mr Cursley's Remembrance assembly, use the PowerPoint and the video to talk about what Remembrance day is and why it is an important day in History.

Phonics sounds of the day!

Mrs Clay + Mrs Fullbrook

Recap the sounds s a t p i n m.  Introduce new sound d for dinosaur.  Watch the Jolly Phonics video on YouTube and learn the song and action.  Say a selection of words emphasising the first sound as a long sound and with a slight gap between the first sound and last chunk eg mmmmm - ap (map).  Ask your child what sound the word starts with.  The video posted on Tapestry on 24th October, Stages 5 and 6 explains how onset and rime works and how this leads into children being able to identify initial sound and to orally blend sounds together.  Use words such as mug(mmm-ug) lion (llll - ion) sink (ssss - ink) swing (ssss-wing) zip (zzzz-ip) snake (sssss-nake) fan(fff an) van (vvvv-an) moon (mmmm-oon) rain (rrrr-ain) ladder (llll - adder) rabbit (rrrr - abbit) spoon (ssss-poon) rake (rrrr-ake) sun (ssss - un).  When your child is confident, try not emphasising the first sound eg d-og and again ask what the first sound is.

Miss Plumb

Recap the sounds m, d, g, o, c, k. Introduce the new sound 'ck', watch the Jolly phonics video on YouTube and learn the song and action. Explain to your child that this is called a digraph- where 2 letters make one sound. Play a game of Grapheme bingo, lay the green grapheme cards out in front of your child, say a sound they then have to show you the correct sound. Continue practicing oral blending; pretend you are going shopping and you have written a list of items you need, can the children find these items around the house e.g. t-i-n, p-a-n, b-i-n etc.
