Teaching Assistant

My Journey

As a child, I enjoyed all aspects of school. I especially loved transforming plain paper into ‘amazing’ pieces of art with paint or colouring pencils. I was also very curious about everything and wanted to find out how things worked. This curiosity later led to a career as an analytical lab technician.

My journey at Glastonbury Thorn School (GTS) started when my children joined the school at five. I started volunteering as a parent helper to facilitate their integration in this new environment (they had been attending school in Southern Africa). I felt that my help was appreciated and that my children were supported fully as they settled in. I enjoyed my time in school so much that when an opportunity came up to work here as a teaching assistant I grabbed it with both hands! Ten years later I am still working here supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. I like getting to know the children well as well as their families thus building strong relationships. This allows us to all work as a team to facilitate positive learning experiences for the children. I find it immensely rewarding to be a part of a child’s learning journey. Having lived in three different countries, I have had the privilege of following different education systems and curricula and sometimes draw on that experience in my work. I am also constantly challenging myself to learn more and do better at my job and am currently studying towards an ‘Early Childhood and Education’ degree - “Every day getting better in every way!!"
