Ask your child to draw a picture of themselves and write their name. If they are unable to write their own name, ask them to have a go - it is fine for them to draw shapes or squiggles as this is a stage they will go through before writing. We need to celebrate any attempts at writing to help children to feel that they can write and give them the confidence to have a go.
If your child is beginning to write, please ask them to write a sentence about themselves eg I have black hair. Some children will write the initial sounds they can hear, some will write more sounds and some children will not be able to write any sounds. If your child is unable to write the sounds they hear please ask them to tell you which sounds they can hear to label the picture head, leg, hair, foot, hand etc and annotate their picture. This is a really important stage in your child's learning and will prepare them for writing when they are able to form letters correctly.
