Learning Journey

Listen to

What does it mean when we say we are going to measure something? Talk about length and height. What is length? What is height? What words do you know relative to length?

Talk about ways we use a ruler - when do we use them? What sort of things do we measure with them? Explain we are using rulers again today.

Collect a selection of 8 sticks (each one not exceeding 30cm in length). Order sticks from shortest to longest. Measure sticks. How long is the shortest stick? Longest stick?

Digging deeper: How could we find the difference between the shortest and the longest stick? What could we use?

Tuesday

WAIL To measure length using non standard measure

Success criteria: I can measure objects using non standard forms of measure

Learning Journey

Practical length height investigation. With support, children use string to measure height and then string to measure distance between their arms outstretched, fingertip to fingertip. Compare the two - what do you notice?

Digging Deeper

Can you think of another part of your body you could measure and compare? Can you see a pattern in watch you measure? Perhaps try your shoe with the actual length of your foot. What could you measure them with?
