Understanding types of absence:
Every half-day absence from school has to be classified by the school (not by the parents), as either authorised or unauthorised. This is why information about the cause of any absence is always required.
Authorised absences are mornings or afternoons away from school for an acceptable reason e.g. illness, medical/dental appointments which unavoidably fall in school time, emergencies or another unavoidable cause.
Unauthorised absences are those which the school does not consider reasonable and for which no “leave” has been given e.g. parents keeping children off school unnecessarily, absences which have never been properly explained, shopping or birthdays, and day trips/holidays in term time which have not been agreed.
If your child is unwell and will not be attending school, please report their absence before 9.30am to our school office (01908 504648).
If a child is absent from school and the school has not received a phone call or other message from the parent/carer, a first day absence call will be made. The Business Support Manager follows this system:
Phone parents/ carers
Repeat this during the first morning of absence if there is no response.
Phone emergency contact number(s) to get an up –to-date contact number for the parent/carer and update the school system accordingly.
Speak to the parents at home time, if they are at school to pick up other children.
Speak to parents face-to-face or by phone the next day.
